Puente was one of its heavies, but in New York at least, the tradition was maintained into the pachanga and even boogalu era of the '60s by Joe Cuba. Jaunty mambo, soupy English-lyric boleros, Latin-jazz or neo-típico this was an archetypal Latin New York sound. Joe Cuba born Gilberto Calderon in 1931 in the city of New York, was a Puerto Rican musician. Cuba is considered to be the Father of Latin Boogaloo. His parents emigrated from Puerto Rico in the late 1920s and settled in Spanish Harlem, a Hispanic ghetto located in Manhattan. Cuba was raised in an apartment building where his father had become the owner of a candy store located on the ground floor street level floor. In 1962, after recording three albums for Mardi Gras Records, Cuba recorded his first album with the Joe Cuba Sextet called Steppin' Out featuring the hit 'To Be With You', featuring the impressive vocals of Cheo Feliciano and Jimmy Sabater Sr. The band became popular in the New York Latin community. The lyrics to Cuba's music used a mixture of Spanish and English, becoming an important part of the Nuyorican Movement. In 1965, the Sextet got their first crossover hit with the Latin and soul fusion of El Pito I'll Never Go Back to Georgia. We Must Be Doing Something Right 1966. Bang Bang 1967. The Joe Cuba Sextet was one of the tightest bands in NY in the 60 s. Their trademark Latin Soul sound was not only unique but it was truly brilliant. This re issue features the incredible track 'El Pito' -one of the biggest hits of the era. The album illustrates the bands ability to go from Spanish to English and back again pioneering a crossover sound that played in clubs from Harlem to LA. Other key tracks include 'My Wonderful You', 'Pruebalo, OK', 'Bochinchosa', 'Incomparable', and 'Clave Mambo'. This album has been digitally re.
