Overall, this solo album does justice to the form he is trying to honor. There is a lot of good songwriting to be found on A Thousand Miles Since Yesterday, and country purists will be pleased with the instrumentation and narrative song structures. However, the vocals lack needed character and the cumulative effect is not quite convincing. A Thousand Miles Since Yesterday, Folklore, Nothing Stays the Same. Haywood dedicates the album to country-rock pioneer Gene Clark, and a version of Clark's Gypsy Rider is a highlight. It's the original songs, however, like Fool Enough, The Longest Walk and Travellin' Man Blues, which stay closest to the ByrdsBurritos template that work best on A Thousand Miles Since Yesterday.
