The Tales of Hoffmann French: Les contes d'Hoffmann is an opéra fantastique by Jacques Offenbach. The French libretto was written by Jules Barbier, based on three short stories by E. Hoffmann, who is the protagonist of the story. It was Offenbach's final work he died in October 1880, four months before the premiere. Offenbach saw a play, Les contes fantastiques d'Hoffmann, written by Barbier and Michel Carré and produced at the Odéon Theatre in Paris in 1851. Although there are several recordings of Les Contes d'Hoffmann in the catalogue, and I don't claim to have heard even a representative sample, I doubt few of them surpass this wonderful, fresh-sounding, superbly sung, conducted and performed version. Part of its success is due to how compellingly and clearly it lays out the story in terms of atmosphere and dramatic momentum. Offenbach spent a massive tranche of the autumn of his years on The Tales of Hoffmann, only to die while it was in rehearsals. Although it was more-or-less all ready, the promoters brought in composer Ernest Guiraud, who had made a minor name for himself just a few years earlier with his reworkings of the recitative sections of Bizets Carmen.
