Complete set. CD 5 has some wear. Walter certainly was a grand student of Beethoven and he transformed his scholarship into an intense, perfect performance. Since the glorious Ninth is, in my humble opinion, the greatest single work of human creativity that would make this the best record ever, in one certain way. The first incarnation, while Walter lived in NYC, was made up of NY Phil and Met players among others. In this Beethoven set and for most of the Columbia Sym recordings, however, we hear mostly players of the LA Phil, as Walter had taken up final residence in Beverly Hills. It helped that Beethoven's symphony had a heavy percussion feel, which Murphy cranked up a couple of notches with his amazing ingenuity. Other selections, while creatively different, are just as good, but didn't burn a hole in the charts like Fifth. Beethoven is always portrayed as a cranky genius, but Harris' Beethoven is so human - impulsive and brutish, then reflective and apologetic, then insensitive and crude, then regretful and humble - someone trying not to make the same mistakes over again. The film is full of delightful words and gestures. Whether you have read volumes of history on Beethoven or are only passingly familiar with the Fifth, I recommend you see this lovely film about the humanity that lived within the genius who infused music with life. 70 out of 99 found this helpful.
