Two cantatas are featured here, the rather grand Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme BMV 140 and Ein' feste Burg BMY 80, based on the familiar Lutheran hymn, with its heavyweight opening and rather lightweight conclusion. The South German Madrigal Choir and Instrumentalists and the Consortium Musicum under Wolfgang Gönnewein provide expert accompaniment for a quite superb quartet of vocal soloists. There are many people who love 's cantatas, and their taste is different. All three cantatas are based on famous Lutheran chorals, Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott' BWV 80, Sleepers, awake BWV 140 and Jesu, Joy of Man's desiring BWV 147. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God German: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is one of the best known hymns by the reformer Martin Luther, a prolific hymnodist. Luther wrote the words and composed the melody sometime between 1527 and 1529. It has been translated into English at least seventy times and also into many other languages. The words are a paraphrase of Psalm 46. Ein feste Burg is one of 52 chorale cantatas that Bach composed. He wrote approximately 40 of these in his role as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, which form the backbone of his chorale cantata cycle. A chorale cantata is a church cantata based on a Lutheran hymn both in terms of text and melody. yy This section opens in D major, passes through B minor in bar 101-102, then passes through A major the dominant in bars 104-106, ready for a return to the tonic in bars 107 to the end. The chord progression I-viib-I in bar 70 is a good example of how Bach uses this cadence mid-chorale
