L'Histoire du soldat The Soldier's Tale is a theatrical work to be read, played, and danced lue, jouée et dansée by three actors and one or several dancers, accompanied by a septet of instruments. It features actors Madeleine Milhaud then-wife of composer Darius Milhaud, Jean Pierre Aumont, and baritone Martial Singher portraying playwright C. Ramuz's spoken dialogue as Narrator, Soldier, and Devil, respectively. In its original LP form, this L'histoire du soldat was paired with an equivalent French-language version featuring the same cast. This one-of-a-kind piece for actors and chamber ensemble came about when Stravinsky was looking for a new work to follow Les Noces, and another ballet proved unfeasible. The players are all virtuosos and Stokowski has them performing as a tight ensemble. The French actors are equally fine, especially Jean Pierre Aumont and Martial Singher, as the soldier and the devil. There is no English translation in the jacket notes, merely a synopsis of the action
