Threadgill's layered, idiosyncratic compositions still abound, but as one would expect from a front line like this, the sound is darker and more dense than on prior releases. The new approach is especially evident in the thick mix of reverb-riddled guitar notes, rumbling tuba phrases, and march rhythms heard on numbers like Drivin' You Slow and Crazy, Bee Dee Aff, and Unrealistic Love. Since the dissolution of Very Very Circus, Threadgill has continued in his iconoclastic ways with ensembles such as Make a Move and Zooid. Zooid, currently a sextet with tuba Jose Davila, acoustic guitar Liberty Ellman, cello Christopher Hoffman, drums Elliot Kavee and bass guitar Stomu Takeishi, has been the primary vehicle for Threadgill's compositions in the 2000s. Threadgill was born in Chicago. He studied piano, flute, and composition at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, and Governors State University, in University Park, Illinois. Indeed the group features two electric guitarists, but also two tuba players, a trombone and the usual alto sax and flute from Threadgill. As mentioned above, the general line of standard jazz laced with gypsyManouche-Klezmer influences is respected, but its definitely more experimental, sometimes downright weird with dronal tubas and grinding electric axes, with a noticeably slower execution pacerhythm.
