The Anthology of American Folk Music is a six-album compilation released in 1952 by Folkways Records catalogue FP 251, FP 252, and FP 253, comprising eighty-four American folk, blues and country music recordings that were originally issued from 1926 to 1933. Experimental film maker Harry Smith compiled the music from his personal collection of 78 rpm records. This is a stellar, highly influential collection of American folk music assembled by Harry Smith, denizen of New York's storied Chelsea Hotel. Smith was a fascinating character whose interests extended from musicology, painting, filmmaking, linguistics, and magick. Smith sequenced the three volumes with a great amount of care, placing songs on the Ballads volume in historical order not to be confused with chronological order so as to create an LP that traces the folk tradition, beginning with some of the earliest Childe ballads of the British Isles and ending with several story songs of the early 20th century. Its broad scope-from country blues to Cajun social music to Appalachian murder ballads-was monumentally influential, setting musicians like Bob Dylan down the path to folk fandom.
