Siroe, re di Persia, composed in 1728, is not the 'great Handel' stuff like Giulius Cesare, Serse, Alcina, Ariodante, or probably even Partenope, Tamerlano, and definitely not the later great Oratorios. It is in the traditional opera seria format, with some very nice, but not really memorable pieces. Basses Noack and de Jong offer some interesting singing, and countertenor Schmid is very competent, if not outright outstanding. For fans of Ann Hallenberg, this is a worthy purchase. Handel's opera Siroe, rè di Persia was premiered at London's Haymarket Theatre in 1728. Not entirely by coincidence, in the year following George II's accession to the throne, it forms with Riccardo Primo, rè d'Inghilterra and Tolomeo a kind of triptych on royal subjects. The warm alto of Ann Hallenberg Siroe, the polished lyric soprano of Johanna Stojkovic Emira, and the lighter, more agile soprano of Sunhae Im Laodice contrast nicely with one another, and each one is well suited to her role. Sebastian Noack carves out King Cosroe's highly rhythmic music with good character. Siroe formed part of a triptych of operas on royal themes that he composed in late 1727 and 1728 to coincide with George II's accession. Composed 12 years later, Imeneo is a much more intimate, almost domestic work, which Handel later performed in concert as a serenata, but which nevertheless contains some arrestingly beautiful numbers, as well as a number of brief choruses, and a spectacular showpiece aria for the leading male character, Tirinto.
