Water is set for worldwide release on January 29, 2016 and conveys imaginative responses to everything from mighty oceans and great lakes to raindrops and snowflakes as well as inviting listeners to contemplate the mounting threats to the safety, security and supply of this essential resource. What inspired the idea to record this album is really the fascination that so many composers of the 19th and 20th centuries seem to have had with th. To add something new to it is a tall order, but pianist Hélène Grimaud inarguably does here. She does so with the conventional repertoire on the album alone: edgily static pieces by Luciano Berio and Toru Takemitsu broaden out into and deepen the Romantic and post-Romantic favorites from Ravel, Fauré, Liszt, Albéniz, Janácek, and Debussy the marvelous Cathédrale Engloutie. Hélène Grimaud was born in Aix-en-Provence, France. She described family nationalities in a New York Times interview with John Rockwell: My father came from a background of Sephardic Jews in Africa, and my mother's ancestors were Jewish Berbers from Corsica.
