Morlix's plaintive complaint of a singing voice is oddly winning, particularly when set to these songs of regret and cockeyed optimism. Of particular note is his excellent slide guitar playing throughout. Now if we could only do something about that cover. Gurf Morlix is an American singer-songwriter and music producer. Born in Buffalo, New York, Morlix moved to Texas in 1975 and performed with Blaze Foley. He moved to Los Angeles in 1981 and joined Lucinda Williams's band. He accompanied her from 1985 to 1996 and produced two of her records, Lucinda Williams and its follow-up, Sweet Old World. In this case, a creepy photo of Morlix's head floating among some reeds in a pond fronts a collection of well-crafted country-blues tunes. If Gurf Morlix were to be judged by the quality of his singing voice this CD would maybe rank just two stars. However quality cannot be measured in a purely objective way. There are some great self penned songs, solid arrangements and excellent guitar playing
