Gridlink split up following the completion of their third record, Longhena, and while it's a shame that they are no more, they ended their career with a record insurmountable by themselves or their peers. A cursory look at Longhena's numbers may suggest that Gridlink was calming down. It's their longest record at 22 minutes, and features a couple songs that break the two-minute mark. But Longhena is by far their most intense album, fueled by the fact that it was their last. You can hear that attitude in everyone's playing. Chang's screams are as much of a impenetrable. GridLink - Longhena review: A new gold standard in grind. Review Summary: A new gold standard in grind. The cover art to GridLink's Longhena is the kind of thing that only Jon Chang can get away with. It looks more like the poster for a live action Neon Genesis Evangelion reboot than it does anything that associates itself with heavy music, grindcore in particular, but once again, it is so indicative of just about every word Jon Chang has screeched or drawn inspiration from in both Discordance Axis and in GridLink

Longhena is possibly the most musical grindcore album ever recorded, and definitely the best grindcore album named after the final boss of a video game (and don't think there aren't contenders).

Riffs are played as fast as possible but the pacing and song structure are immaculate, so that a very organic flow emerges at levels micro (within individual songs) and macro (across the course of the entire album).

Lyrical subjects center around the insular tragedy of isolation and horrifically stark awareness of the slow but inexorable loss of one's own agency and volition as life progress ponderously toward a mysteriously dismal conclusion (or lack thereof). The blow is softened (or, depending on your degree of nerdery, sharpened) by virtue of being filtered through a lens of anime and video games. For the very *serious* and *mature* listener, this makes everything quite easy to write off, but for those in the know, the pieces of media being referred to here are very specifically selected to demonstrate a distinctly idiosyncratic apprehension of trauma and fear in the face of overwhelmingly powerful opposition, which is basically par for grindcore, but counterintuitively pulled off with less pretense than usual by Gridlink.

Nevertheless an undercurrent of almost insane optimism permeates these dire utterances thanks to the wildly cool riffs that pair blazingly energetic force with a grim melancholy, impressing upon the listener a sense not so different from that of an anime hero facing the ugly realization that his life is in the hands of military superiors who utterly lack any honorable inclinations, or that of a shoot-em-up pilot desperately dodging an onslaught of hailing bullets with nary a hair's breadth between instant obliteration and a gloriless victory.

The whole vibe I get from the album could be summed up as realizing that you may come through a desperate situation with either your honor or your life intact, and you have only a heartbeat to decide which matters most.

All in all it's a great album and one I've played regularly for years. If for no other reason, listen for the outrageous riffage, and maybe stay for the weirdly relatable introspection.
