In the Glare of Burning Churches is the fifth demo album by the black metal band Graveland. It was originally released in 1993, on cassette format, on Witching Hour Productions. It was then re-released on No Colours Records in 1996 on CD format, and again on the same label and format in 1999 along with Epilogue. The demo is inspired by 'Holy War' waged in Norwegian Black Metal underground against christianity. It was indexed by the German Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons in. The ghastliness of these demos is in line with some of the most far-reaching black metal of the era, and the low fidelity ultimately helps foster the collection's morbidly creepy vibe, especially when contrasting moments like the ambient synth interlude Instrumental and ominous church organ segue The Dark Dusk Abyss break up the demonic black metal compositions. My favorite thing about In the Glare of Burning Churches is certainly the combined tone of both the guitar and the bass. The guitar tone is a quite thin, buzzsaw style guitar tone, that could be considered Euronymous's guitar tone on steroids, and the bass is low and grinding, acting as sort of a thickened for the guitar tone, preventing this from sounding thin. Actually, this is one of the heaviest black metal albums I have heard again, listen to The Night of the Fullmoon. I have nothing bad whatsoever to say about In the Glare of Burning Churches.
