Glenn Herbert Gould ɡuːld 25 September 1932 4 October 1982 was a Canadian pianist who became one of the best-known and most-celebrated classical pianists of the 20th century. He was renowned as an interpreter of the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bruno Monsaingeon made this television film about Glenn Gould in 1974, when the pianist had been in self-imposed exile from the concert platform for more than a decade. Filmed in Toronto, it is a sometimes contrived mixture of interview and performance: part documentary, part feature. It gives Gould the opportunity to expound many of his pet theories, some more convincing than others, and more importantly to play the piano, which he did as well as anyone in the last century.
