Concert for George is a live tribute soundtrack album in honour of George Harrison, recorded on the first anniversary of his death, and issued in 2003 in conjunction with the simultaneous DVD release of the same name. Featuring performances of many of Harrison's best-known songs, played by his closest musician friends, Concert for George is considered a fitting and heartfelt celebration of Harrison's considerable career. This is one of five live albums by the George Shearing Quintet that was reissued on CD in a box set by the Mosaic label. The LP has six fine performances by Shearing's group in 1963 the vibraphonist is a young Gary Burton. Interestingly, as I re-listen to this - my LP had been lost for several years - the comparison to the George Shearing style of that era compares quite favorably to the George Shearing of the 1980s, although much of his approach to the music of both eras was musically top-notch. The latter Shearing style seems much more reflective when compared to the be-bop stylisms of the 1950s - and altogether pleasing to the ears. Vintage Shearing to be sure and a treat to listen to.
