Luc Ferrari February 5, 1929 August 22, 2005 was a French composer of Italian heritage and a pioneer in musique concrète and electroacoustic music. He was a founding member of RTF's Groupe de Recherches Musicales GRMC, working alongside composers such as Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry. Ferrari was born in Paris, and was trained in music at a very young age. He studied the piano under Alfred Cortot, musical analysis under Olivier Messiaen, and composition under Arthur Honegger. In 1965 and 1966 he produced with Gérard Patris for ORTF Les grandes répétitions, a series of television documentaries on contemporary music. He won several prizes as the Karl Sczuka Prize 1972 for Portrait-Spiel and for Je me suis perdu 1988 . Ferrari also won Prix Italia 1987 for Et si tout entière maintenant and Prix Italia 1991 for L'Escalier des aveugles. In 1990 he received the Koussevitzky Foundation Prize for Histoire du plaisir et de la désolation. In 1972, Ferrari established his own studio atelie. Between 1965-68, the composer Luc Ferrari collaborated with director Gérard Patris on a series of filmed intimate portraits of great musicians, 'Les Grandes Répétitions' The Great Rehearsals. Created for the ORTF, and encouraged by its director Pierre Schaeffer, these remarkable films were shown on French TV. They are remarkable not only for their exceptional content, but also for the creative camera work, including dynamic hand-held shots and croppings, and the juxtaposition of music and talk.
