David Comes to Life is the third studio album by Canadian hardcore punk band Fucked Up. It was released on June 7, 2011 in North America and June 6, 2011 elsewhere on Matador Records in CD and double LP formats. David Comes to Life is an 18 song epic in four acts. It became Fucked Up's first charting album in the United States ranking at number 83 on the Billboard 200. On Fucked Up's new album, the band brings concept to the forefront for a group of songs that tell a dramatic tale. Tyler, The Creator banned in the UK. Leading up to this 78-minute double album, they released four 7 singles packaged with eight unreleased songs related to the story, and a compilation record titled Davids Town, for which guest artists accompanied the Canadian punks as they pretended to be various fictional Brit-pop bands. This concept was a long time coming, and after writing a few songs about the main character David Eliade on previous singles David Christmas and Davids Plan, the band fleshed out a full story line from his perspective. Toronto's Fucked Up continue their outsized ambition with a lengthy rock opera featuring a twisted storyline and epic guitar-driven songs. Their reach continues unabated on their new album, David Comes to Life, a 78-minute rock opera. The story of David Comes to Life is fairly complicated and, at points, heavily meta. It concerns a factory worker named David Eliade who falls in love with a woman named Veronica Boisson. They conspire to build a bomb together and death, destruction, and redemption follow along the way, the story's narrator does battle with David for control of the plot. More importantly, what makes David Comes to Lifes nearly eighty-minute runtime not to mention its pretension forgivable is its pure, relatable force. I dont think Im going out on a limb when I say the whole love-story-devolving-into-existential-crisis thing is merely the bands way of embodying the frustrations of their own characters Davids voice is funneled through Damians, after all. In this regard, Fucked Up harvest the land our pilgrim friend Mr. Pallett charted out last year, and now you can eat of what its gritty soil yields. So beat your fucking steering wheel.
