De tijd waarin de elfmansformatie in spé hun eerste shows in no-time uit de grond moest stampen lijkt een eeuwigheid geleden. Three Fat Men Три толстяка written in 1924, by Yuri Olesha, was published in 1927. It was the first revolutionary fairy tale in Soviet literature. The critical reaction at first was varied. Boichevsky in an article How Stories For Children Should Not Be saw it as a sugarcoated presentation of revolution. Anatoly Lunacharsky, however, saw in it heart-felt apologetics by the artistic intelligentsia accepting the revolution. Three Men on the Bummel also known as Three Men on Wheels is a humorous novel by Jerome K. It was published in 1900, eleven years after his most famous work, Three Men in a Boat To Say Nothing of the Dog. The sequel brings back the three companions who figured in Three Men in a Boat, this time on a bicycle tour through the German Black Forest. I read Three Men in a Boat last month and didn't learn anything at all And this month I pick up Three Men on the Bummel and expected AT LEAST a concise travelogue with pretty pictures describing the joys of riding bikes down hills in sweet German countrysides and partaking of local cuisine and generally trying to make myself understood. It takes place years later, when two of the three men have wives and children they must figure out how to ditch so that they can take a bicycling tour of Germany. It was written not long before WWI, and the references to the extreme orderliness of German society are discomforting. Three bachelors find themselves forced to take care of a baby left by one of the guys' girlfriends. Three bachelor friends - architect Peter, artist Michael, and actor Jack are sharing an apartment in Manhattan. After Jack goes filming in Turkey his two flatmates find his baby daughter - which Jack doesn't know about - left outside their door. The two are left to look after the baby, and realise how difficult this can be. Some time after Three Men in a Boat, George, Harris and Jerome decided to go on a cycling holiday through Germany.
