Album
Piñata is the first collaborative studio album by American rapper Freddie Gibbs and record producer Madlib. It was released on March 18, 2014, by Madlib Invazion. Entirely produced by Madlib, the 17-track LP features contributions from Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Domo Genesis, Scarface, BJ the Chicago Kid, Ab-Soul, Casey Veggies, Meechy Darko and Mac Miller, among others. The album was recorded by Josh The Goon Fadem and Glenn G-Wiz Browder between January 2011 and October 2013. It was. Indiana rapper Freddie Gangsta Gibbs teams up with legendary hip hop producer Madlib for one of the most essential hip hop albums of the year. What did you think of this album Love it Hate it. Madlib: recorded the vocals on his own. Like, I handed him all the CDs, and he picked out all the beats he wanted, he recorded them at his studio, then he handed those off to me, then we finished it. I would add little things, like these choruses. Gibbs: I was still in the streets when I first started that Madlib album. I was, then I wasnt. You can tell the progression on the record, though. Album 2014 17 Songs. Gibbs is a nimble, gifted rapper, his syllables quick-stepping around Madlib's many twists and turns, from the grainy '70s soul-funk of Scarface to the half-time disco of Harold's to the hazy West Coast G-funk of Thuggin. The duo's credentials are strong enough to pull some of hip-hop's finest into their orbit: oddball Danny Brown contributes a verse to the squirming High, while the crews from The Wu-Tang Clan, Top Dog Entertainment, and Odd Future are all represented via cameos from Raekwon, Ab Soul, and Earl Sweatshirt. The appreciation of Madlib and Freddie Gibbs' new collaboration Piñata depends on the range of your hip-hop tastes and your familiarity with both artists' deep cuts. Funk-fusion and soul jazz breaks bubble and blister in the heat and Gibbs states the facts as he sees them. Pinata, as a collaboration with Madlib and an MC, naturally makes Madvillainy the easiest comparison. Yet, to contend that Gibbs must exist solely in Dumiles iron-masked shadow is to do Pinata injustice. Pinata is a far more aggressive album, and this is mostly due to Freddie Gibbs. His deep voice is evocative of a less syncopated, less furious DMX, and his classic gangsta lyrics and flow mesh with the instrumentals impeccably. The album gets progressively more confident as it goes on, with the only guest appearances from Danny Brown and Raekwon until the last seven tracks, which feature many other rappers from Domo Genesis to Ab-Soul and Scarface. Genre: Hip Hop. Piñatas most obvious accomplishment is as a polished contemporary Gangster Rap album, and its a feat in subject as much as sound with Gibbs at his self-reflective best. Full Review. Freddie Gibbs and Madlib make an unlikely duo: Gibbs is a brusque street-rap purist with an icemaker for a heart, Madlib a crate-digging cult hero with a taste for deep psychedelia and free jazz. But the MC and the producer click in surprisingly satisfying ways on their first full-length album together, as Madlib's beats add a druggy, unpredictable edge to Gibbs' hard-boiled grudges and regrets. At its best, Piñata recalls the dark-alley vibes of Raekwon's classic, RZA-produced 1994 debut, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. It's no coincidence that one of the stron. Pinata is the only Gibbs record I loved, until now. I've listened to almost nothing but Bandana since it's release, and it clicked instantly for me day of release. I think it's better than Pinata, and has the potential to be a classic. I disagree that Madlib didnt shine as much as he did in Piñata. Bandana feels like a Madlib mixtape with Gibbs expertly trying to keep up. In this way, I feel like Bandana is ultimately a better album than Piñata
