In that perios, in September 1816, one year after he left Lichtenthal, Schubert wrote his fith symphony in B flat major. It is scored for a amall orchestra with no clarinets, trumpets or kettledrums and this feature seems to testify that Schubert, probably, composed it for an amateur orchestra. Such a orchestra used to gather on Sunday afternoons first in the flat of his father at Lichtenthal and later in the appartments of his various Viennese friends. Soon after its conclusion the Symphony was performed by this orchestra in the house of Hatwig, a member of the Court Theatre Orchestra.
