By October 1977, Frank Zappa was firmly established as an iconic and iconoclastic rock star. He had recently been preparing Läther, a proposed 4-LP set, due for release on Halloween. However, his label declined to proceed, leading to protracted legal hassles.

This show, at The Palladium, New York was broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour, on the album's release date and finds the great man on superb form, as he tackles a range of material, much of it from Läther.

It features recordings compiled from various shows at The Palladium, New York City in late October 1978-including a Halloween show on October 31-along with some video content from the same period. The set includes a performance of Ancient Armaments, which appears on the album for the first time in digital form, having previously been included as the B-side to I Don't Wanna Get Drafted in 1980. Zappa arrived at the Palladium in October 1977 under heavy legal weather. A deteriorating relationship with Warner Bros. Records, the distributor of his DiscReet label, reached an infuriating low that year when Warner Bros. refused to release Zappas next intended release, a four-LP anthology of new and archival work, Läther. Zappa was forced to carve that material across a series of separate LPs for the company while building a new album from scratch. The Palladium shows were the start of that next record, 1978s Sheik Yerbouti.
