Maybe that's why Joe's Garage seems so thin and thrown together, musically and dramatically, especially on its second and third sides. Frank Zappas satirical rock opera, Joes Garage, is ambitious and mad, brilliant, peculiar and incoherent - epithets that have also been applied to German expressionist Georg Buchners unfinished play, Woyzeck. This may seem like a ludicrously lofty cross-cultural reference to attach to an album most notorious for a song about Catholic girls aptitude for fellatio, but there you have it. As a music maker and recording artist, Zappa has always cultivated two warring images - the serious composer with a social satirists sense of irony versus the smutty crowd pleaser with a puerile sense of hum. The story is told through the narrative of The Central Scrutinizer, as Joe forms a band, has sex with appliances, is imprisoned and then released to a world where music is outlawed. As usual, Zappa tempers a number of styles, with touches of country-pop in the title track and stoned-out 70s rock wafting from A Token of My Extreme. Most guitar solos have been taken from old live tapes and reformatted to the studi. On its own, Acts II & III is a pretty good Zappa album, beginning with some very odd tunes and then exploding into full-blown progressive songs the like of which still remind me to Zappa's 1969 magnum opus, Hot Rats.
