Among his best-known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue 1924 and An American in Paris 1928, the songs Swanee 1919 and Fascinating Rhythm 1924, the jazz standard I Got Rhythm 1930, and the opera Porgy and Bess 1935 which gave birth to the hit Summertime. She was born in Manhattan, the younger sister of George, Ira and Arthur Gershwin. She was the first of the Gershwin family to perform as a child, and she brought home a good sum of money for the time. She married Leopold Godowsky Jr. co-inventor with Leopold Mannes, of Kodachrome color photography. Godowsky was also first violinist with the Los Angeles and San Francisco.
