Haque was born in Chicago in 1963. His father was from Pakistan, his mother from Chile. When he was a child, Haque traveled with his parents all over the world, spending time in Spain, France, and Iran, in addition to Pakistan and Chile. In 1981 he was given a guitar scholarship from North Texas State University, where he studied jazz guitar. He left after a year and studied classical guitar at Northwestern University. At Northwestern, he joined Howard Levy. Guitarist Fareed Haque's Cosmic Hug is in many ways similar to the early-'70s fusion of Miles Davis although without utilizing any horns. The electric piano of Dan Limmer is very reminiscent of the era, as is the exotic use of Kalyan Pathak's tabla. The music includes some fairly simple one-chord grooves but also some accessible pieces that are much more complex than they sound. When guitarist Fareed Haque first came onto the scene in the late '80s, he revealed his impressive technique and placed diverse musical interests, including classical and Indian music, within a more improvisational jazz context. It seemed as though he'd be the next big thing. With a melodic sensibility that brought to mind certain elements of Pat Metheny, along with the blinding technique of an Al Di Meola albeit more restrained and, consequently, less bombastic, it just seemed like a sure thing.
