Esben and the Witch's debut album, Violet Cries, has such a perfectly goth title that its something of a surprise that it wasnt claimed decades ago. Likewise, the bands brooding sound bears the dark-eyed influences of Siouxsie Sioux and Miranda Sex Garden, as well as contemporaries like Effi Briest and Zola Jesus. Esben and the Witch were nominated for the BBCs Sound of 2011 just before Violet Cries was released, and its easy to hear why: even when they dont do anything remarkably new with their ethereal style, they imbue it with a tremendous amount of passion. Violet Cries is the debut studio album by British alternative rock band Esben and the Witch. The album was released on 31 January 2011 through Matador. The album came shortly after the band's shortlisting in the BBCs Sound of 2011 poll. A UK tour accompanied the album as well. The album spawned three singles including Marching Song which was moderately popular and is usually associated with the band. Throughout the exquisitely mournful Violet Cries, Rachel Davies issues Cassandra-like predictions of woe and mayhem, while Thomas Fisher's filigree guitars shimmer like sunset on a lake. It's small-g gothic, reminiscent of Dead Can Dance: Matador won't thank me for saying it's a record whose spiritual home is 4AD. Album 2011 12 Songs.
