I was sitting in the audience at the Rainbowas I heard the opening wail of Layla, the first number of the evening, then the lyrics, my blood ran cold. He might have been wrecked for the last three years, but he hadnt forgotten how to tear at the heart strings with his guitar. This really is one of the best concerts of all time and it's fantastic to hear so much more of it. Highly recommended. Read more. Welcome to Eric Clapton's mailing list. The primary reason for Claptons disappearance was his descent into the throes of heroin addiction. His condition was partly the result of or exacerbated by his unrequited love for Pattie Boyd Harrison, wife of his friend George. Another friend, Who guitarist Pete Townshend, knew of Claptons plight and urged him to return to active musical duty. After an announcer introduces the assembled musicians as Eric Clapton and the Palpitations, Clapton fires off the memorable riff that opens Layla. Script error
