EP-4 was formed in March 1980.
It all began when Kaoru Sato, founder of new wave disco Club Modern, formed a four piece (voice, guitar, bass and drums) “play band” of club DJs and employees to perform at an event. In the audience was Soh Suzuki (now Soshi Suzuki) who is now a writer, French literature specialist and translator. EP-4 was formally launched when Suzuki joined the band as the keyboard player. The band then underwent subsequent member changes and by May 1982 EP-4 had become a tight band comprised of the following six members.

As previously mentioned, Ryuichi Sakamoto joined EP-4 on keyboards at the legendary event “Urban Synchronity” (held on 9 November 1981 at the Kyoto Kaikan Concert Hall’s annex), held during a period of inactivity that followed Soh Suzuki leaving, and Kawashima Banana joining, the band. It is an example of EP-4’s unique and groundbreaking initiatives in Japan’s street rock scene (the setting for Japanese street culture), underpinned by a postmodern perspective that transcended the conventional conflict between the concepts of “major” and “minor”.
