Ely Guerra in Mexico City, 2017. Guerra wrote her first song at age ten. She attended school at The Evergreen State College in Washington. In 1986, Guerra was the backing vocalist of the band Carmín. Recorded in Spain and produced by Teo Cardalda, her debut album Ely Guerra was released in 1992. However, the album failed to achieve the expected success. After finishing her contract with BMG, Guerra signed with another record label, EMI. The label also released a 12 compilation of remixes titled The Lotofire Mixes. A 2003 compilation EP titled 4 was released in Argentina and Chile. It contained songs from Pa' Morirse de Amor and Lotofire. Lotofire might be Ely Guerra's U. debut, but there's an experienced performer behind this disc - in her native Mexico it's her third record. And accomplished it certainly is, while also intelligent and mostly off the beaten path. Even the two tracks that veer closest to alternative rock have a definite tweak - thanks to the involvement of producers Andres Levin and Arto Lindsay, while guitarist Marc Ribot offers some left-field contributions. Ultimately, though, it's down to Guerra, and she has the songs and voice to make this work, as in Profunidad, which t. The albums doused with intelligence, sensuality, and sophistication, but the lyrics are raw and dark: The Portishead-leaning Yo No places the singer in the shoes of a femicide victim, while Tengo Frío ices its easy-listening sound with lines about paralyzing fear.
