Getting Away with It is the first single by the English band Electronic, which comprised Bernard Sumner of New Order, ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, and guesting vocalist Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys. It was first released in 1989. Musically, Bernard Sumner wrote the verse and Johnny Marr wrote the chorus. The lyrics, co-written by Tennant with Sumner, are a parody of Marr's Smiths partner Morrissey, and his public stereotyping as morose and masochistic Pet Shop Boys would further satirise this. Even without knowing anything about the group, I was able to identify the New Order and Pet Shop Boys elements I didn't know about the Smiths - a fact that I was quite proud of, and I immensely enjoyed the results. Labeled here as an EP after all, it took almost a year after this single was released for me to find Electronic's first full album, this first single from Electronic's self-titled debut was a relative radio and dance floor hit here in the States. Electronic were a duo formed in Manchester, UK in 1989 consisting of New Order vocalist Bernard Sumner and ex-The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe from Pet Shop Boys and Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk also collaborated with the band. They released three albums during the '90s, with their debut Electronic selling over a million copies worldwide. However, the follow-up Raise the Pressure, despite debuting in the UK Top 10, was a commercial flop by comparison. Electronic's debut single remains its prime achievement, a beautiful, sweeping piece of dancefloor melancholia that brings together a slew of fantastic performers. Sumner's vocal is a delight his winsome, shy approach, which works so brilliantly in New Order, succeeds just as well, delivering a lyric about unrequited love with regret and gentle ache. His synth-piano line works nicely, a bit of stuttering salsa-techno appropriate for the proceedings
