In the meantime, Sollmann has been exploring pastures far from the dancefloor, teaming up with percussionists and electric guitarists and toying with bell tones and neo-kosmische abstraction. What all of those have in common: an escape hatch from the strictures of just intonation and the conventional 12-tone scale. Those tonal experiments have rubbed off on New Atlantis, the most diverse and ambitious recording to appear under the Efdemin name, incorporating not just standard electronic kit but also dulcimer, sing-drum, hurdy-gurdy, and guitars. There's Phillip Sollmann, who in 2017 marshaled a stage full of Harry Partch and Harry Bertoia instruments for a subtle, modern composition called Monophonie. And there's Efdemin, the emotional techno producer who DJs closing sets at Berghain. Until now, the German artist has kept these pursuits mostly separate. Yet over three albums for Dial and various experimental works, he's yearned for a synthesis of these approaches. These two identities are coming together, Sollmann told Resident Advisor in 2014.
