Baxter was born in Colorado, but grew up in Los Angeles, where he began performing professionally in his late teens. He played with Glen Gray and Frank Masters toward the tail end of the big band era, then settled into the studio system, where he worked as musical director translation: one-man live studio orchestra for a variety of day-time game shows.
