An underrated cool-toned guitarist who sounds at his best in straight-ahead settings, Rodney Jones had his highest visibility during his period with Dizzy Gillespie 1976-1979, when he was in his early twenties. Jones had previously worked with Jaki Byard and recorded with Chico Hamilton, and he would follow the association with Gillespie by working for a time as Lena Hornes accompanist. Rodney Jones is leading the vanguard of Modern Jazz Guitar in his newest release, Explorations. He encompasses the very best of the tradition of jazz guitar while pointing the way to the future of it. Rodney is the torchbearer of Jazz guitar, from Charlie Christian, to Wes Montgomery, to George Benson, and now him. On Explorations he demonstrates deep swing, rhythmic diversity, in the moment improvisation, masterful phrasing and articulation, supreme harmonic knowledge, technical wizardry, and a fearlessness to explore that which has not been played before on guitar. Jones syrupy voice was featured on quite a few funky 45s for labels including Tuff where he cut the Northern Soul classic R&B Time , Twinight, Westbound and Brunswick. The Whole Thing was the flip side to Willie Hendersons Loose Booty on Brunswick. Here Jones half-sings and raps his way through a description of a soul food party, making good use of the Alka-Seltzer jingle I cant believe I ate the whole thing and creating a fun funky 45 in the process.
