Adam Workman from The National said DJ Shadow gave his sample-heavy, largely instrumental hip-hop music a more ambitious. The Mountain Will Fall. DJ Shadow. Josh Davis. DJ Shadow, Run The Jewels. On The Mountain Will Fall hes shifted further toward original composition, a vast experimentation of beats and textures, synthesizers and live instruments including horns and woodwinds. The album features Run The Jewels, Nils Frahm, Matthew Halsall, Ernie Fresh and more. Includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more. The sounds of the components have varied from release to release, but The Mountain Will Fall, as much as anything else, can be classified as a sprawling, largely instrumental suite rooted in hip-hop. There are subtle and abrupt changes in mood, dashes of off-center humor, and moments of bass-drum bombardment following extended stretches of austere atmospheres. As contemporary as much of The Mountain Will Fall sounds, there are still a few reminders that were listening to a DJ Shadow record. The second half of Three Ralphs is the closest thing here to vintage Shadow: echo-laden minor key piano chords, sputtering synths, a morbid snippet of movie dialog. Still, the drums fire off in inhuman machine gun blasts, an immediate reminder that what were hearing wasnt built on an MPC. It is his first studio album since 2011's The Less You Know, the Better.
