Rise Above is an album by indie rock band Dirty Projectors, released on September 11, 2007. The album was band leader David Longstreth's reinterpretation of Black Flag album Damaged from memory having not heard it in 15 years. The album features Longstreth on guitar and vocals, Amber Coffman on vocals and guitar, Brian McOmber on drums, Nat Baldwin on bass, and Susanna Waiche on vocals. Rather than short, angry shouts of protest, the songs often double or triple quadruple in the case of Spray Paint The Walls the original lengths of the songs and present the lyrics in an array of highly melodic tapestries of music. The album boasts strong string and wind arrangements, most of which came from the album's original 4-track demos. Rise Above is the Dirty Projectors' attempt at recreating Black Flags album Damaged from memory over 15 years after hearing it. I just sort of began writing melodies, and then sort of distinct from the melodies I was making, thinking of the words as well as I could, and then just sort of pairing them as best I could, lead singer David Longstreth told NPR.
