This is also the first album where Tjodalv switched to drums as opposed to guitar and the last where lyrics would be written by Aldrahn of Dødheimsgard and Ved Buens Ende until 2003s Death Cult Armageddon and the last album to feature Brynjar. This time around, Dimmu Borgir seems to have aimed for a sorrowful black metal album. The qualities of the music easily grasp this ambition. Spoken vocals and melodic passages are present just as they were the years before. Many songs are still the minimalistic, heavier black metal that they dispersed throughout albums, such as Antikrist or Da Den Kristne Satte Livet Til. At first glance, many may believe that Stormblst was a second-rate rehash of a past achievement. This could not be further from the glorifying truth. The abovementioned elements are what make this album special. Stormblåst, Dimmu Borgir's second full-length album, has all the makings of a future first-tier black metal outfit finding its footing in the misty, cragged mountains of Norway. However, unlike most of its Scandinavian accomplices, Dimmu's sound got progressively more aggressive as its career advanced, making Stormblåst a relatively tame entry in its catalog. Still, the band's youthful exuberance would have benefited from a more punchy production the flat, faceless mix relegates indiscriminately buzzing guitars to the background while keyboards wash over the arrangements - a b.
