As he begins his seventh decade on this planet, McPhee continues to create challenging music in a European context on Oto. The album was recorded live in London with the British avant-jazz organbassdrums trio Decoy in 2009, and it contains three long, uncompromising pieces of free jazz that show McPhee's urge for innovation to be as strong as ever. This stonking live recording features Hammond-organ trio Decoy in company with cult US saxophonist McPhee, whose wildly energetic squawks make it hard to believe he's over 70. While the music is truly made up on the spot, there's no lack of shape, with the three pieces developing structure through constant shifts of pulse and metre.
