Steal This Album is the third studio album by System of a Down, released on November 26, 2002, on American Recordings. Produced by Rick Rubin and Daron Malakian, and reached 15 in the Billboard Top 200. Both Serj Tankian and John Dolmayan have called Steal This Album their favorite System of a Down release. This album was released shortly after a collection of medium-quality MP3s found their way onto the Internet under the unofficial name Toxicity II, a year after the release of the group's multi. Steal This Album is the Coup's masterstroke, taking the advances of Genocide & Juice to the next level and coming up with one of the most underappreciated hip-hop albums of the '90s. Down to a duo, the Coup officially becomes a vehicle for Boots Riley's observations, which it mostly was already still, there's a greater focus simply from the fact that it's a product of one ambitious vision. Boots' impassioned political rhetoric is still in full force, but the main strengths of Steal This Album are its fleshed-out characters and witty, detailed, image-rich stor. But Steal This Album was a revelation, the group reduced to the duo of rapper-producer Riley and DJ Pam the Funkstress, their rabble-rousing POV even sharper from the titles shout-out to 60s counterculture hero Abbie Hoffman on down, their songs blooming into Homeric epics or party-starting anthems, or both. The Coups future is unknown, though an expanded, live-instrumentation-oriented version of the group, joined by luminaries from Killer Mike to E-40 to Janelle Monáe, appeared on Julys Sorry to Bother You: The Soundtrack. Album 1998 17 Songs. These 17 songs show group leader Boots Riley pushing his beats toward the sound of a live band-all the better to emphasize his vision of a political movement powered by human strength. His lyrics remain focused on a critique of the American capitalist system, but his concepts have become cleverer and more audacious
