Time Machines Coil - Ape of Naples is the final studio album by English experimental group Coil. The album was the definitive effort of primary Coil musician Peter Christopherson, who compiled material from 1993 to 2004 to reassemble and rework it into a coherent final album. It was produced and released following the death of co-lead artist and lead vocalist John Balance, who died on November 13, 2004. As the last album recorded during John Balance's lifetime, it serves as a final statement and summation of the band's multi-faceted career. Naples is much more of a classic-sounding Coil album in the vein of Love's Secret Domain and Musick to Play in the Dark, Vol. 1 than more recent outings such as ANS, Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil, or Astral Disaster. John Balance was one of the greatest song writers to ever walk planet earth Ape Of Naples was released a year after John Balances death making this album way more disturbing and eerie if you read into the lyrics of handfull of the tracks on here. About The Ape of Naples. A mourning album with songs not always related through their origins, but an album where all sounds come together perfectly to create a classic thread of dark pleasures. Peter Christopherson assembled this album himself, as Jhonn Balance had fallen to his death the year before. Much of the source material was taken from the sessions for Backwards, as well as live recordings and other unreleased material. In particular, Jhonns performance on Going Up was taken from the final moments of the bands last concert. The Ape of Naples is a brilliant eulogy for the too-early-passed John Balance, the Coil album to cap the 25 or so years that Balance and Peter Christopherson made beautiful or noisy, or dangerous music together. The material on Ape of Naples was put together over a number of years, but uncannily it sounds like a brilliant last gasp, like Balance knew death was rushing towards him with eager reinforcements: it's full of questions about mortality and spiritual existence. It's saturated with loss. Musically the album has a warm electronic glow, the tempo is mid-paced, the tone lyrical. Threshold House.
