Victorialand is the fourth studio album by the Scottish alternative rock band Cocteau Twins, released by 4AD in April 1986. Working without member Simon Raymonde, who had been enlisted to collaborate on This Mortal Coil's Filigree & Shadow album, vocalist Elizabeth Fraser and guitaristproducer Robin Guthrie produced a record almost completely devoid of percussion, drenching acoustic guitars in reverberant space to create a wide, expansive sound that bordered on ambient. Release notes. Produced by Cocteau Twins. All titles written and performed by Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser. Richard Thomas plays saxophone and tablas courtesy of Dif Juz. Art direction and design by 23 Envelope. Victorialand reached 10 on the UK albums chart. An instrumental version of Oomingmak was released with the 1991 EPs and Singles Box Set. In 2020, 4AD re-released Victorialand with remastered audio pressed to 140 gram vinyl and the original 23 Envelope artwork and photography. The title takes its name from a land mass in Antarctica. Victorialand is small in that it runs a mere 32 minutes but main writer Robin Guthrie knew that their signature sound and format works best in miniatures. His canvases the albums and the songs themselves are small and delicate objects shining, bright things that sparkle and turn just enough to fascinate and affect, then disappear into thin air like gossamer whisps.
