Originally released as a double album 'Cliff Goes East' (Outside U.K. only)
"It was the end of 1958 that reports began appearing in the press of a new singing sensation in Britain. Not all reports were entirely complimentary, and one deplored his 'violent hip-swinging during an obvious attempt to copy Elvis Presley' which the reviewer found 'revolting'. Nevertheless that same scribe predicted that the artist in question 'will become a top star and enjoy a lengthy musical career'.
The artist was Cliff Richard, and how right that reviewer was. Here we are halfway through the 70's and Cliff is still right at the top nearly 18 years after that prediction, and assured of staying up there just as long as he chooses. It's a unique success story for the boy who was born in Lucknow, India, on October 14, 1940, and who freely admits he was a hip-swinging rocker in those far-off days of 1958 when he was still finishing his schooling.
"Every kid in their teens has an idol," Cliff once remarked. "Boys try to imitate the person they admire most. With me it was Elvis Presley. Since then I realise there may be lots of kids going around trying to imitate me, and the most important thing in the world is that I never let them down in any way. That means not just what I do or don't do on stage - but in the way I live my life".
That stated principle is one from which Cliff has never wavered or deviated throughout his pop career and it's one of several for which he is widely admired. Of course, every true professional has his detractors, whose main motive if they were honest enough to own up, it's envy. Cliff's critics have derided his clean-cut, wholesome living image and his proudly self-avowed Christianity, but they have not bothered him in the least or caused one moment's doubt.
This album typifies the style and professionalism which took him to the top and has kept him there from the early days of 'Move It' through to the softer moments of 'Living Doll' and the glittering series of film successes like 'The Young Ones' and 'Summer Holiday'. Cliff Richard in concert is like Cliff Richard in person - straightforward, sincere and true to his own principles."
