The piece Stones, written by Christian Wolff in 1968 remains one of the greatest open scores. Having
played it in several circumstances and with various member at the improvisation space E42.A8 in 2016
and 2017, we thought it could be great to invite a few friends to play other versions of the piece, for the 50th
birthday of its creation.
All possible variations were encouraged: solo, duo, as a group, hi-fi or lo-fi.
Within a few lines, Wolff opens a lot of space for improvisation, interpretation and even mis-interpretation, and this compilation proves this beyond our hopes. Here are the results!

Wolff was born in Nice, France, to the German literary publishers Helen and Kurt Wolff, who had published works by Franz Kafka, Robert Musil, and Walter Benjamin. After relocating to the U. in 1941, they helped to found Pantheon Books with other European intellectuals who had fled Europe during the rise of fascism. The Wolffs published a series of notable English translations of European literature. This was released as a compilation, which unfortunately went a bit unnoticed. But you can find it here christian-wolff. Though, having made all the stone recordings I got this completely different idea as well, which you can stream in this track.
