Chris Dave and the Drumhedz is the debut self-titled studio album by Chris Dave and the Drumhedz. It was released on January 26, 2018, by Blue Note Records. 5 stars out of 5 and praised the Drumhedz's performance of the album. Kellman compared the album quality to D'Angelo's Black Messiah 2014. Pitchfork gave the album a rating of 6. The final two songs on Chris Daves debut album present a vivid argument for the drummer as modern bandleader. After a couple of minutes of the psychedelic Lady Jane, the Houston-born musicians stickwork explodes, scattering percussive shrapnel all over the track before he takes command and slows the song to a stuttering halt. But the relationship between guests and hosts isnt even. The sheer number of voices, which is around 50 once you factor in musicians, threatens to muffle Daves smart and soulful playing. When the vibe is stripped down, the project works best, but it often feels like slogging through molasses to get there. Chris Dave was born in Houston, Texas and began his music career in the late 1980s. He states that although his father plays drums, he has never actually seen him play. As a teenager, he was exposed to jazz legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane when listening to music with his father. Chris Dave blossomed on the drums, eventually graduating from Houstons prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
