Chester & Lester is a collaborative album by guitarists Chet Atkins and Les Paul released in 1976. It was recorded in the mid-1970s when Atkins was in his fifties and Paul in his sixties. Atkins coaxed Paul out of his decade-long retirement for this recording. The liner notes state there is very little overdubbing and the majority of the album was live in the studio. After eight years away from the microphones, Les Paul joined forces with country music's Chet Atkins in a marvelously relaxed, tasty session of cross-cultural jamming. The sound of the backup band may be Nashville country, but the tunes, mostly drawn from Paul's repertoire, are jazz and pop standards Caravan, It's Been a Long, Long Time, Avalon, etc. By 1976, Chet Atkins and Les Paul were practically in a league of their own, and here the guitar innovators go head-to-head, picking their way through a collection of jazz and pop standards. Their take on Caravan, originally a Duke Ellington song, sounds like a snippet from an Allman Brothers jam recorded 30 years in the future, and Al Jolson's Avalon becomes a drag race-both legends egg each other on as they speed down the track. Then I remembered this album he made with Chet Atkins in the mid 70s, when vinyl was king. A friend of mine raved about it, I borrowed it, taped it, the tape snapped, and I now have the CD. Ooh it's lovely . Chester & Lester was probably the only jam session record to win a Grammy. Today, such an album would merely seem like clever marketing: two virtuosos from different genres, country and pop, joining forces. Not so in 1976. Truth was, Chet Atkins and Les Paul had way more in common than many realized. Each made groundbreaking records that put electric guitars on the map and influenced the sound of rock.
