Music Written for Monterey 1965 subtitled Not Heard. Played in its Entirety, at UCLA is a live album by American bassist, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus recorded at Royce Hall in Los Angeles and first released on Mingus' own Jazz Workshop label in 1966. The album was rereleased by Sue Mingus on the Sunnyside label in 2006. In September 1965, Mingus returned to Monterey where he had played an enthusiastically received set the year before prepared to debut several new pieces hed composed just for the occasion. The brilliance of the music assembled on this recording should not be surprising Mingus was coming off the aforementioned triumph at Monterey the year before, and was less than two years removed from the release of what many consider his magnum opus, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, which employed more than double the number of musicians - mostly quartets and. He was also known for his activism against racial injustice. Mingus' legacy is notable: he is ranked among the finest composers and performers in jazz, and recorded many highly regarded albums. Dozens of musicians passed through his bands and later went on to impressive careers. His songs - though melodic and distinctive - are not often recorded by later musicians, due in part to their unconventional nature. Mingus had planned to premiere a large body of compositions at the September 1965 Monterey Festival, but his time on stage was limited to under thirty minutes, precluding the performance of most of the new material. A week later, the bassist-leader and his ensemble would perform the complete concert at UCLA. Subsequently, Mingus would obtain the tape made by amateur UCLA sound technicians and press a mere 200 double-LP sets for sale on his own mail-order label
