A slight stopgap release between Thrumdone and Vas Llegas, Holy Smokes is a mix of the inspired and not-so-much. The band's sense of humor crops up more than once, at times brilliantly. Ray's Jesus may be nothing but a bad pun when it comes to a title, but Tak's nutty recounting of a modern family with suspiciously biblical names and antecedents is a scream. Holy Smokes contains five exclusive tracks recorded during early sessions for the Welcome To Vas Llegas, and was released just prior to that album. It is sometimes erroneously listed as a single called Ray's Jesus, the EP's lead track. Sore Finger is an instrumental, and all music was written by Carnival Art, with lyrics by P. Tak, except Feel Like Makin' Love, which is a tongue-in-cheek cover of the Bad Company classic, written by Paul Rodgers and Mick Ralphs. Formed in Los Angeles in 1989, the band in the beginning consisted of Michael Petak lead vocals, guitar, Shane Paul Rhody guitar, vocals, Ed Dobrydnio bass guitar, and Keith Fallis drums, vocals. They released their debut album, titled Like Nobody's Business, exclusively on vinyl through their own record label Spineless Voodoo Records the same year.
