Especially the German music he got into right from the start, buying albums from Virgin Records in London of bands like Cosmic Couriers, Klaus Schulze, Guru Guru and Amon Duul II. Some of the tracks on this album are from the very first releases Intervention 87 1981 and Freewheel To Freedom 1981, which were more experimental and minimal incorporating guitar sounds. Other tracks off the albums Aksu 1980, EastWest 1981 and Iridescence 1983. The vinyl is barely played condition , 20 November 2017. Carl Matthews Aksu Mirage M601 1980. Another mid-twenties space progger who was apparently completely oblivious to the musical revolution happening around him, and carried on playing at being Tangerine Dream into the 80's and beyond. This mini space-synth revival around 1980-4 consisted wholly of chaps with beards too old for punk ,too young for hippy, with very bland names, living in the most unfashionable rural arseholes of England. If he had called himself 'Aksu' and the album was called 'Carl Matthews' my perspective on this tape would have been enhanced. Carl Matthews was one of the early pioneers in the UK electronicsynthesist movement, producing cassette releases via Mirage, Electronical Dreams and various compilations. Recently he has had a track featured on the compilation CD ''On The Noise Floor'' Cherry Red Records and an album release of his early cassette years via the German label VOD. Tuath De Danaan. Originally commissioned for use in the yoga classes Smiths mother teaches, these ambient soundscapes have a natural, invigorating warmth. El Mirage is the sixth album by American singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb, released in May 1977 by Atlantic Records. This was the second album for which Webb handed production and arrangement duties on to another person, George Martin, producer of The Beatles. The album is notable for containing The Highwayman, a song that later provided both the name and first hit for The Highwaymen, a country supergroup comprising Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. Experimental synth music at its finest. For fans of Tangerine Dream.

I know very little about Carl Matthews, finding just limited information on Discogs I went on a bit of a hunt and found a soundcloud page (it wasn’t really a hunt, there was a link on Discogs but I’m trying to add some drama), where he describes himself as ‘An old guy who likes making sounds for Library/Production companies.’Then I found this ‘Carl Matthews, a synthesist who started out in the late ’70’s producingCosmic (Space) Music in the style of the early composers of the German electronic scene.Cassette tapes were produced and distributed by Mirage, Electronical Dreamsand the ICR label.’ So, essentially, the album I bought is by somebody I’ve never heard of and can find only sketchy information about. That, I’m sure you’d agree, did not bode well for the LP I was about to put on my turntable. I played the album soon as I arrived home with it, and my expectations were entirely wrong, it is absolutely brilliant and having listened twice now I cannot fathom why this isn’t massive, I like it that much. Imagine for a moment that Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream were asked to get together and produce a soundtrack to a movie of a Philip K. Dick novel whose main theme is how our increasing reliance on technology is eroding our humanity. That, to me, is this album. It has the sweeping vistas of Tangerine Dream but also the intricacies of Kraftwerk and the repetitiveness of both (Note to reader: I love repetitiveness).I have to make some assumptions but it would appear from the track information, that these are reproduced from tapes recorded in the early 80’s and that they are very much influenced by kosmische musik (you can call it Krautrock if you really want to).I just read the card that came with the album, I should probably done that first. The tracks were recorded on a Reel-To-Reel recorder using a Korg Polyphonic Ensemble, Korg M20 Synthesiser and a Korg SQ10 sequencer. I’m sure there are people out there who know this musician, but it is entirely new to me and, almost certainly, would be undiscovered had I not been sent it by Miguel at That Special Record, which is exactly why I have a subscription in the first place, this one is just perfect for me.It appears to be a limited numbered edition of 444 copies.
