He was associated with the Cotton Club in Harlem, New York City, where he was a regular performer and became a popular vocalist of the swing era. His niche of mixing jazz and vaudeville won him acclaim during a career that spanned over 65 years. Cab Calloway's Orchestra is heard in 1950 shortly before their breakup on four titles dominated by the leader's vocals although the tenors of Sam The Man Taylor and Ike Quebec have brief spots. On the flip side the obscure Ernie Fields big band performs seven songs that are R&B-oriented in the personnel are future Ellington members trombonist Booty Wood and altoist Geezil Minerve. This is an interesting set for collectors but more general listeners can pass on this one.
