Burton Greene born June 14, 1937 is a free jazz pianist born in Chicago, Illinois, though most known for his work in New York City. Ins and Outs is the second of three recordings issued by the CIMP label documenting the playing of pianist Burton Greene in his 69th year. The other two include a solo performance and series of pieces in which Greene leads a quintet. Considering Burton Greene's remarkable legacy as a radical improviser in the genre of free jazz, this album might surprise some of the pianist's admirers. But it shouldn't, because Greene has absorbed a wide range of influences in more than 40 years of professional performances. The standard piano trio format is one that Greene embraced early on in a 1966 date for ESP, On Tour, as a method for extreme subversion. Here, coaxing unearthly racket is not the name of the game, but rather it's a summation of inside-outside playing in a timeworn format. Skumpy , previously recorded solo on Shades of Greene Cadence, is given a significantly kwela-inspired rhythmic kick.
