The founder and leader of Burning Sensations, Tim McGovern, is currently fronting the classic rock band Knucklehead in the Pacific Northwest. Burning Sensations lone self-titled LP was produced in 1983 on CapitolEMI Records and was produced by Tim McGovern and David Jerden. Burning Sensations was a short-lived Los Angeles area rock band. The group is best known for its MTV hit Belly of the Whale, the music for which blends a rather unusual fusion of rock and calypso styles, and for covering the Jonathan Richman song Pablo Picasso, which was included in both the 1984 film and soundtrack of director Alex Cox's Repo Man starring Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez. This tune that I'm reviewing sounds like the authentic song, and certainly sung by the original band Burning Sensations as opposed to some later band trying to do some cheap remake. Burning Sensations' album and EP sounded nothing like all of the prefabbed pigeonholes that popular music was expected to conform to at the time, which is what makes it so refreshing even now. Unfortunately the original versions presumably remain sequestered in the label's vaults, which seems particularly unjust given some of the 80s embarrassments from the CapitolEMI roster that have found their way to CD and mp3.
