Buddy Rich in Miami is a 1958 Verve live album by Buddy Rich featuring Flip Phillips recorded at the Dream Bar of the Johnina Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida in 1957. The album has been re-issued on CD alone and also, as Live in Miami with Flip Phillips, together with several additional tracks from a 1954 RichPhillips LA studio recording session with the Oscar Peterson Trio. Rich's work was arguably one dimensional and these two live dates, captured for the ages from 1954 and 1957, set out a case in favor of that argument as persuasive as any. Rich, as was his vocation, is all over his drums on everything here, his extrovert nature in harness to a musical sensibility seemingly too precise to tolerate any way other than his own. It's all there in abundance on the opening Lover, Come Back to Me, which for all intents and purposes is taken by two bands of which Rich himself is one. As it is, the rhythmically more square and orthodox phrasing of Phillips has the effect of emphasizing just how extraordinary Lester Young was. Buddy Rich in Miami was cut live at the Dream Bar, located in the Johnina Hotel in Miami Beach. It was an after-hours joint and the patrons were ready for badass jazz played by two of its most extroverted personalities - who'd gotten to work together with Norman Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic Orchestra Phillips spent a decade there. The rhythm section included pianist Ronnie Ball and bassist Peter Ind, both of whom had studied with Lennie Tristano. They hold down the fort beautifully as the solos, breaks, and drumbeats fly throughout the five tracks that make up the set. The hig.
